nokia has a 41mp smart phone.
What on earth.
it would figure, wouldn't it?
I go and I buy a Nikon D5100 and then revolutionary camera technology is released.
IN A PHONE.
No word of a us launch yet, but you can check out the pictures it takes at Nokia's Flikr here's a rather crisp sample. It's been resized, but remember, this was taken with a phone.
sigh. I'm not going to lie though. it looks cool.
"The point is to leverage the processing capability found in the phone. With 41 megapixels they can do interesting processing things to the image to get a good quality 5mpix image. That is the whole point of this.
They are allowing you to save a 38 mpix image if you so choose.
But the "core" of this tech is to provide 3x digital "lossless" zoom as well as pixel binning (or, what they call oversampling) in order to increase the quality from such a small chip."

I'd like to take the time to warn anyone who bothers to stumble across this.
cheap gear can cost you. I almost had a near death encounter with my camera, the brief story follows.
Like most of you, I carry my camera everywhere. It's attached to me and my friends and family have gotten used to seeing it in my hands, hell, at my local college I'm "that guy with the camera." But I digress, I was driving home from work on an extremely windy night and I noticed the moon. She looked like a gigantic orange slice hanging in the sky, taunting me.
I took the bait. I set everything up and started a long exposure. Not wanting to stand in the wind, I sat in my car and watched my camera in the dim ambient sky light as the wind raged outside. Then I watched one of the legs fail and the wind knock her over.
She's okay.
the first thing I did after cleaning her profusely was order a heavy duty tripod.
I have not looked back.
